Amazon.co.uk Review A Hard Day's Night may have been The Beatles' first big-screen experience but, as they had become the biggest band in the world by the time of its production, the Moptops were able to ensure it was a bit different from the band-movie norm. "We'd made it clear that we weren't interested in being stuck in one of those nobody-understands-our-music plots," John Lennon would later recall. "The kind of thing where we'd just pop up a couple of times between the action, all smiles and clean shirts, to sing our latest record. Never mind all your pals, how could we have faced each other if we had allowed ourselves to be involved in that kind of movie?" Instead the quartet recruited a young director named Richard Lester--who had previously worked with the Fab Four's beloved Goons--to make a movie that followed them as they enjoyed and endured the phenomenon that was Beatlemania. "The film wrote itself right in front of our eyes," says Lester. "We just took the dirty bits and cut them out." The result is a frenetic hour and a half inside The Beatles' personal space as they engage in all manner of surreal hi-jinks--more often than not involving Paul's "grandfather" (played by Steptoe and Son's Wilfrid Brambell) while dodging the ever-present horde of screaming fans. Although the result now seems a little dated, there remains an almost heart-breakingly good-natured aura around the foursome's naïve performances while few could argue about the quality of a soundtrack that includes "Can't Buy Me Love", "And I Love Her" and "A Hard Day's Night" itself, to name but a few. Whether the film would have been quite so successful if Lester had followed McCartney's suggestion and called it "Oh, What A Lovely Wart!" will, sadly, never be known. --Clark Collis

WHAT ABOUT A BLU-RAY REVIEW??? August 14, 2010 Jojo Allen (Liverpool) I love The Beatles. I love this film. I think the DVD transfer looks fab.
Why are there no reviews of the Blu-Ray version?
All the versions, including the Blu-Ray listings, have the same 35, now 36, reviews but they're all about the standard DVD release, not Blu-Ray.
I'd love to buy the Blu-Ray version.
Anybody want to tell me why I should...or shouldn't?
brilliant first movie July 28, 2010 Beatle nut (Kent, UK) If you're a Beatles fan or not, A Hard Day's night is a must for anybody wanting to watch a fun movie, though it does help if you love their music. The film is expertly acted by The Beatles and is the blueprint for many other "rock/mock u mentary" films for years to come. Just think of it, no hard day's night = no Rutles or Spinal Tap etc. Basically, if The Beatles did'nt do this movie all bands would be taking themselves a bit too seriously and disappearing somewhere in the dust. Hooray for their talent. 10/10.
Favourite Beatles album, but ... April 25, 2010 A. King ... it was interesting to see the film again which was a joy but it does now seem quite a period piece. It is almost an extended early video with limited storyline. But, hey, the songs; the cameos; the one one-liners; ... just wonderful!
Enjoy!!
Hard Days Night February 1, 2010 Mrs. L. Bostock (Scotland U.K.)
It was great seeing this film again. I was and still am a Beatle fan.
I was priveledged to spend a day with the fab four when they were recording
a programme for Radio. This DVD will bring back many memories for all the old
fans out there. Even though it is black and white and I suppose the acting might
leave a bit to be desired it brings to life the magic of the Beatles and their music
A must buy for all those Beatle lovers old and new.
