Amazon.co.uk Review Something a little different to the norm, Across The Universe is, in its simplest form, a collection of Beatles songs that have been strung together into a musical. But what a musical, and ultimately, what a fascinating film too. Across The Universe follows Jude, played by Jim Sturgess, who travels from Britain to America in the 1960s, and eventually meets Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood). The film then picks up the story of their romance, with the likes of Vietnam war protests sitting in the background, along with a strong-yet-unknown supporting cast who more than hold their own. Across The Universe progresses its narrative through a mix of Beatles numbers, and it's a method that sometimes works exceptionally well, and at other times feels a little bit shoehorned. Nonetheless, more of it succeeds than fails, and there's no denying the quality of the musical work, even though it's not the Fab Four whose vocal talents are used. Sometimes a bit uneven, Across The Universe is nonetheless a brave and bold screen musical, with a striking visual style. Director Julie Taymor--who previously directed the musical of The Lion King on Broadway--has fashioned a gleefully unusual movie, that's a bit risky, sometimes a bit stretched, but very, very watchable. One of the most interesting little gems of 2007. --Jon Foster

can't be done any better than this July 7, 2010 William George The film deserves to be much better known. Its storyline hardly seems contrived at all, and the music is played and sung with a freshness which gives the songs a new lease of life. But their interpretation in the context of the film is the most surprising aspect - it's almost as if they had been written for the purpose.
Altogether an amazing musical and dramatic experience, which more people should share. I recommend it without reservation.
Ok story and great music, but far, far too long. May 31, 2010 J. S. Hardman (Near London, UK) The basic storyline of "Across the Universe" is fine, the backdrop of the 1960's (Vietnam, drugs etc) is ok, the music is a large chunk of The Beatles catalogue so that's great, the visuals are in places amazing, and some of the acting is pretty darned good. So what's not to like? Well, the film is too long and too busy - it's as if the creators had sat down and for as many pieces of Beatles music as they could think of, created scenes around each, then stitched them together and hoped for the best. Unfortunately, they could have taken quite a few scenes out and ended up with a better result. Particularly the druggy bits in the middle - I am a huge fan of Eddy Izzard, but his bit and bits either side of that could easily have gone.
Think Mama Mia, with Beatles music rather than Abba, with better singers, but without any of the humour, then make it far, far too long, and the result is "Across the Universe".
Great little musical to some of the best Beatles tracks March 15, 2010 Nice little musical with original arrangements of some of the best Beatles tracks. You'll want to watch it over and over again!
A new look at beatles music March 15, 2010 R. W. Evans (UK) I am amazed that this film has not hit mainstream cinemas. The combination of the imagery of the scriptwriters story and the Beatles music is wonderfully interpreted by the film director,a lady of whom I was vaguely aware (I think she was involved in the stage production of 'The Lion King'. A must for Beatles fans.
Aging hippies, absent Beatles January 20, 2010 JCV (Adventure, FL United States) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
A celebration of the Beatles, but without the Beatles. Instead you get some actors singing to music track. You also get the self-important arrogance of the 60s generation (take a look at the title: the "Universe," you say?) and "insight" into the horrors of the Vietnam War comprising gay actors in period battle dress uniform splashing through water.
A truly nolstagic adventure if your pushing or past 60 years of age. Truly, a recruiting poster for the GOP for Generation X, etcetera and don't forget that you cannot trust anyone over 30, over 40, over 50, over 60. Well, you get the idea.
