| Customer Reviews: John Rutter at his best June 16, 2010 A. Brooks 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This selection combines some well-known favourites with lesser known pieces. The journey takes the listener from fanfare to melodic beauty, from sacred to secular. This is a disc to listen to whilst driving, doing jobs around the house, or sitting reading, as none of the pieces is long. Rutter has a real gift for setting a simple tune with haunting orchestration. Before you know it, you will be humming the melodies!
pure indulgence April 28, 2009 Mrs. B. L. Burge (UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This selection takes you from sacred, through folk until the wonderful conclusion of the beatles. It is worth getting the cd for the last three tracks alone. His arrangements cleverly encompass such styles as Grieg, Rachmaninov and Gershwin but has the effect that you truly appreciate the musical composition of the Beatles in particular the arrangement of The Long and Winding Road. Rutter never fails to move.
Distant Land - John Rutter - heavenly! April 14, 2009 G. Scott (UK) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Beautiful music, beatifully played. You will go a long way to better. This is John Rutter at his best.
Excellent - if a bit odd! January 3, 2004 The Penguin (Great Britain) 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
This album is a wonderfully "laid back" collection, bar the eponymous fist track which siezes you and almost takes you to the distant land with the strength of the orchestra, the other pieces are reflective - in common with much of Rutter's choral and ecclesiastical works. The "Beatles Concerto", in contrast is funny and well composed - lacking the twee, overtly tongue in cheek style of the "classic rock" type recordings, - it is more reminiscent of the fantasias composed by Vaughan Williams in as much as it takes the theme of some of the best loved Beatles songs and intertwines deep orchesteral involvement. In short - this album has something for everyone - well recommended.
