Entertaining speaker, disappointing book June 1, 2010 A. Monaghan (Cork, Ireland) Having seen Ken Robinson's talks on TED, I felt motivated to check out his book. I found him to be an entertaining and inspirational guy and I felt inclined to find out more.
Well, what of the book? I can suppose why many people gave it 4 and 5 stars. We all enjoy a good story. I do, and at first I did genuinely find the stories interesting and inspirational, but in this book, the author uses a story to put forward even the smallest idea. By the time I was half way through this book I felt myself getting weary. The point itself seemed lost. But there aren't just success stories. There are other kinds of stories, some of which really seem like digressions for the sake of a story, until at last it arrives on a wispy point, a brief bridge before, god help me, another story. Really I'm sorry to say there's not much more to this.
I loved hearing the Author speak on TED and in this book he sdescribe speaking as his personal 'element', he describes when you're in 'the element', time seems to slow down. This could explain how he got the bulk of this book's message in to a twenty minute TED talk.
Polished and credible viewpoints on creativity May 26, 2010 Mr. A. Kavanagh (London, England) Ken Robinson is an excellent storyteller and those of you who have not seen his presentation on Creativity and how our schools kill it, should go to the TED website and listen to a 20 minute presentation that is touching, funny and thought-provoking.
Uplifting! April 10, 2010 desiamond (London, UK) It might not tell you how to find your own element, but it sure shakes you into action looking for it! Gosh, it takes a lot more research to CHANGE one's LIFE, so please give the man a break; he never promised to do it FOR you! Very inspirational and uplifting. Excellent dinner-party material, if you don't get it otherwise ;-)
