Amazon.co.uk Review Maybe "nobody's perfect," as one character in this masterpiece suggests. But some movies are perfect, and Some Like It Hot is one of them. In Chicago, during the Prohibition era, two skirt-chasing musicians, Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon), inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. In order to escape the wrath of gangland chief Spats Colombo (George Raft), the boys, in drag, join an all-woman band headed for Florida. They vie for the attention of the lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), a much-disappointed songbird who warbles "I'm Through with Love" but remains vulnerable to yet another unreliable saxophone player. (When Curtis courts her without his dress, he adopts the voice of Cary Grant--a spot-on impersonation.) The script by director Billy Wilder and IAL Diamond is beautifully measured; everything works, like a flawless clock. Aspiring screenwriters would be well advised to throw away the how-to books and simply study this film. The bulk of the slapstick is handled by an unhinged Lemmon and the razor-sharp Joe E. Brown, who plays a horny retiree smitten by Jerry's feminine charms. For all the gags, the film is also wonderfully romantic, as Wilder indulges in just the right amounts of moonlight and the lilting melody of "Park Avenue Fantasy." Some Like It Hot is so delightfully fizzy, it's hard to believe the shooting of the film was a headache, with an unhappy Monroe on her worst behaviour. The results, however, are sublime. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

A must for any film buff June 25, 2010 Mr. T. HARWOOD (Kent, England) This is one of my all time favourites. It is faultless. Those two guys dressed as women do a fantastic job. Tony Curtis version of a Cary Grant voice is classic and watching him being seduced by Marilyn Monroe is hilarious. You can see it having affect. The last lines of the film only add to the fun of the film. Brilliant!
undoubtably briliant April 19, 2010 N. Finch (england) The premise of this movie sounds ludicrous, two men witness the St. Valentines day massacre and disguise themselves as women to avoid getting whacked. However the script is amazingly hilarious and the actors performances so remarkable that this blasphemous thought is forgotten within seconds, never to be thought of again.
To avoid the mafia Tony Curtis (a.k.a. Josephine) and Jack Lemmon (a.k.a. Daphne) join an all girl band and head to Florida where they plan to make a swift exit. However Cutis's character falls for the ukulele player, Sugar Kane played by Marilyn Monroe so he disguises himself as Shell Oil Junior and sets about winning her over. Meanwhile Daphne (Lemmon) plays with the idea of letting the rich Osgood the lll make an honest women out of him, after all a gal needs security.
This comedy puts to shame comedies from recent eras. There are simply too many sharp and witty lines to pick a favourite but Curtis's accent he uses for Sugar to disguise his voice is absolutely hilarious!
Curtis and Lemmon play well of each other and give their characters very different qualities that compliment each others comedic style. As always, Marilyn shines in every scene she's in.
This DVD also features interviews with the girls who played the rest of Sweet Sues band and Tony Curtis. Tony Curtis's interview is particularly interesting with cute little stories about Monroe, Lemmon and Wilder.
I cannot recommend this DVD highly enough!
Sublime April 17, 2010 William Cohen (London) I'm always a bit reluctant to pick out the old DVD's but the opening five minutes of this film was just so outrageously unexpected, I kept with it. I loved the mobsters and the musicians. The script is as sharp as a scalpel, and rewatching it, you discover its beautiful intricacies. The ending is also a corker. Your life isn't complete until you've seen this masterpiece.
