Amazon.co.uk Review
What's interesting about this video is also what makes it seem amateurish at first: it is neither endorsed nor authorised by 20th Century Fox or Lucasfilm. The result: a montage of interviews with everybody of importance to the Star Wars world--from George Lucas and Liam Neeson to Samuel L. Jackson and Harrison Ford, with intelligently written voice-over narration, and a unique exploration of Star Wars and Star Trek together. This is at once an homage to the Star Wars trilogies and a documentary of its sci-fi precursors, from silent film to Star Trek.

Since this collection of interviews isn't authorised by Lucasfilm, you won't find footage of the Star Wars movies here, although you will find terrific snippets from sci-fi milestones such as Fritz Lang's Metropolis. A youthful Carrie Fisher talk about the interplanetary appeal of the original Star Wars, while a 20-years-older Fischer talks about the films' fairytale-like grasp across generations. Young and older Harrison Fords and Mark Hamill give interesting perspectives as well; the video also sports one of the longer interviews recorded with the man inside C-3PO.

Besides the actual cast and crew of the Star Wars movies, including The Phantom Menace, there are interviews here with stars as fans, famous people who love the movies as much as anyone: Sharon Stone, Gary Busey, Hugh Hefner, Magic Johnson, Christina Ricci and William Shatner. A fun and provocative look through uncensored interviews across the spectrum at all that is Star Wars, worthy of any fan's archive, this is a must for any serious collection. --Erik Macki

5 out of 5 stars star wars surround sound   April 3, 2010
E. Smith (Sheffield, UK)
Just watched all the original trilogy again this week on my blu ray player and they are awesome! The strange thing is the surround sound- it is brilliant! Dvds that have a better sound than new blu rays is crazy, but the point I want to make is this; on these ltd edition copies the stereo is listed as 5.1 but as my system is 7.1 and all are open channels regardless I happened to notice the side right was picking up as well, making these 6.1! The sound is incredible and the extra channel was a major bonus; you should hear the tie fighters and taun-tauns on Empire. Just waiting for the blu ray now to crisp up the video!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Star Wars episode 1V- still as exciting as ever   December 26, 2009
R. E. Sadler (Barnet UK)
I watched this iconic film on my home cinema and was very impressed with the absolute brilliance of George Lucas's first film in this classic series pitting good(Luke Skywalker) against evil (Darth Vader). I am looking forward to watching epidodes V (The Empire Strikes Back)and V1(Return of The Jedi). The special effects in this movie are still superb even after over twenty years. "May The Force Be With You"

4 out of 5 stars The Classic Star Wars : Fantastic Milestone in the series!   November 12, 2009
C. Barker
I have finally decided to watch all six films (in order of release dates) and see what I make of the finished article that is George Lucas's Saga. I saw all the prequels at the cinemas. As I'm only 18 just now I hadn't seen any of the originals other than on the old VHS tapes and then on the 2004 edition DVD's.

I must admit that this first film has a fantastic 'feel-good' factor about it, and that is right from the start. You get sucked straight into the action from the beginning between the Empire and the Rebellion and that incredibly gloomy entrance made by Darth Vader for the first time is simply spell-binding. By no means can I ever see any future villain in the science fiction genre be as powerful or strong as vader was, if there were any contenders then it would certainly be very difficult to topple vader in my opinion. The Death Star is another powerful presence that most certainly works in this movie and Grand Moff Tarkin played brilliantly by Peter Cushing leads this film along with Alec Guinness who plays Obi Wan.

The feeling of this movie is light in tone but thats the whole magic of the thing. Don't get me wrong, this is not a PERFECT movie. Contrary to it's incredible success in 1977 when cinematically realeased it does have little problems which George Lucas tried twice I believe to perfect (1997 and then again in 2004) the trilogy in time for the much glossy, polished prequels. If you haven't seen any of Star Wars movies then A New Hope is actually a great place to begin you Star Wars experience. The logical place, I know, is Episode I and I know most people would recommend that. In my opinion however I believe Episode IV is the best place to start if you are completely new. This way you can marvel at a great old movie that was ahead in leaps and bound back in '77.

I would like to conclude that A New Hope is the most special, most gracious adition and I am really looking forward to sitting down and watching Episode V. As Vader so said "The Force is strong with this one!"

4 out of 5 stars ......" I find your lack of faith disturbing "......   August 31, 2009

The concept of Star Wars is about a series of fictional planets in a galaxy far far away, who are at war with the evil empire led by Darth Vader. The Death Star (a space-craft as big as a planet itself) is Vader's main weapon in pursuing dominance within the universe.

The first striking element to this film is the storyline itself, which is way ahead of its time. Factors such as conveniently exporting from one planet to another and the idea that we could one day be fighting for space and not just land was the perfect basis for creating a stand-out fantasy film. A film made on such a scale and with equally grand special effects was groundbreaking at the time of its release in the 70s.

Lucas sells his fairytale idea to us with conviction as we are instantly introduced to the countless aliens and creatures in no time. This adds to the appeal and fun factor of the film.

What makes this film a success is that the perfect cast is settled and convincing in their roles. They pull the idea of to great effect. Another important element is that the film does not take itself too seriously and this is proved by the light hearted nature of the script. The comedy is fused perfectly with the rest of the film and this stops the viewer from being bogged down with all the meticulous jargon surrounding the ideology of the film. Essentially, this is a fun and stylish action film and Lucas deserves credit for getting across what he intended to with this film. The real basis of the storyline is to follow in the next two films and also the three prequels that will follow afterwards.

The re-mastered version of the film (although will divide viewers in terms of contents) makes the film a visual treat. It adds to the detail of every scene and makes the film look as though it was made yesterday instead of years ago. The second disc contains the original version of the film which does not have improved picture and sound quality and apart from a Director's commentary there are no other extras in this two disc DVD package.

The opening scene introduces Darth Vader and a whole new world in a film which shows exactly why we love cinema in the first place. It's a rollercoaster `popcorn' ride with a glossy exterior, but there is a sense and purpose to it and Lucas knows exactly what he is doing.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest films in cinema history   June 8, 2009
M. Evans
The first Star Wars film (despite it's billing as episode iv), A New Hope is just a stunning piece of cinematic escapist entertainment. The only film in the sage that can be watched on it's own without having to see any of the others, it's the purest, most enjoyable and darn-right fun of all the 6 films. You know who the good guys are, you know who the bad guys are, the plot can be followed by anyone over 5, the special effects still stand up today, the characters are hugely likeable and identifiable, almost every line of dialogue is memorable, and it has a great feel-good ending. Okay, watching it today it can sometimes come across as a bit cheesy, and there's no real depth to it (the next film was the real masterpiece) but for pure, fantasy escapism, it doesn't get much better than this. And this DVD thankfully has the original version of the film as well as the 'tinkered with' version (why can't you leave them alone George?). Needless to say, the original version is the one you should watch - CGI will date much quicker than the old style effects here.
