Great but could have done with a tube map June 5, 2010 Neil J. Pearson (London, UK) At first I was a little disappointed with this guide as it didn't seem to be that useful in planning my trip in New York, so i ended up taking a borrowed "rough guide" with me too. Once I was in New York, I found myself using this guide more often as it had some really useful mini-walking guides and maps for individual areas. It did have a fold out map with a tube guide on it but i never used it as I hate having to unfold (and worse refold) maps - so i thought it would have been much more useful to have a tube guide on the back page (as the rival rough guide had). Other than that I'd say it was still a useful guide to get ideas of where to go around NY - although I don't think it is sufficient by itself.
Pretty good for a first time holiday!! February 6, 2010 PAVAN RAO (Manchester , UK) Used it on my first trip...and was pretty informative!!!
The maps were useful and the chapters well well seperated....
Not so sure about the Restaurant guide though!!!1
A definite must have for NY
Great book. October 4, 2009 C. P. Smithson (Cambridge, UK) Gives a comprehensive overview of all areas of the city and its boroughs. the pull out map is really useful and means you dont have to buy one when you're there.
It's gone downhill October 1, 2009 JWA Drennan (Dublin, Ireland) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is hard for me to say, but I think Lonely Planet has gone downhill. They have changed their layout and indeed their content style. It is not really geared up for the adventurous traveller, instead, it is resembling a Fodor's Guide for well heeled people. You used to be able to flick through a Lonely Planet and enjoy the writing style, it's now a dull shadow of its self.
Lonely Planet Guide To New York August 17, 2009 A. Macauley (Lancashire) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book has all the information you require when visiting New York. However, the Rough Guide to New York is a lot more informative and set out in a tourist friendly way. So, if you want a better experience, get a Rough Guide!
