| Customer Reviews: Well worth a purchase December 23, 2009 Geoffrey Millar (Brunswick Australia) The 'Classic Albums' series is of variable quality, but always interesting for people who own and love the albums.
The least useful to me are those where the artist has sadly passed on, such as Nirvana's Nevermind or Jimi Hendrix' Electric Ladyland,so you don't get any input from the key artist behind the record. However, they're all still worth a look and the series is good value.
This program could almost fall into that category, but the DVD features exerpts from interviews which John did at the time the album was recorded, so you get his comments on the proceedings.
As usual with this series, you get to listen to alternate takes, how the sound mix was done etc. The conversations with Ringo and Klaus Voorman are fascinating and the extras are worthwhile.
For those interested in the making of 'Imagine', the album which followed this one, the 'Gimme Some Truth' DVD is worth a look.
Recommended.
Great disc that gives brilliant insight into the making of the album August 25, 2009 D. Laurie 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This gives great insight into the making John Lennon's first 'proper' solo album after the breakup of The Beatles. It tells so much about this great recording, many things that aren't noted elsewhere.

Legendary Lennon December 29, 2008 Mr. M. J. Burgess (Plymouth, Devon, UK) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
When I was a nipper I used to own a copy of this album on vinyl. Heaven knows where I got it from. I probably inherited it from someone. But I always found this album hypnotic: the stark production, the bare vocals, the simple, honest lyrics. It's easy to get carried away with the more famous Beatles recordings and the more commercial solo output (Imagine and Double Fantasy) but it's always more interesting to delve into John, Paul, George and Ringo's lesser-known work. This DVD told me so much about this album that I didn't already know. I've seen a couple of other episodes in these series (Queen's A Night at the Opera and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) so I kind of knew what I was in for. But when it's an artist as idolised as Lennon it's nice to strip things back to basics: he was a talented artist and this is him at work. Klaus Voorman (bass) and Ringo (drums) are present and correct along with Yoko and the studio engineers. The only surviving participant missing is Phil Spector. I'm so glad they chose to look at this album rather than Imagine. Now let's bring on Paul's Band on the Run, George's All Things Must Pass and Ringo's Ringo.
