Customer Reviews: Power to the People! September 3, 2010 Quiverbow (Kent, England) I was idly wandering around the music pages of Amazon when I noticed this CD, which I got when it came out. Considering this was released in 2006, one thing that surprised me is that there has been no review on here. Maybe I bought the only copy sold. A soundtrack to compliment a film I haven't seen, this is a collection of songs that encapsulates Lennon's protest side, both peaceful and political in his quest to gain a Green Card. The US government wanted him deported and were forced to concede when their underhand schemes became known. Power to the people! This is by no means a `best of' collection, although a third of the tracks were hit singles, but what it does is mix his more well known songs with others and also includes two previously unreleased versions.
`Attica State' is a live rendition from a show at Ann Arbor in 1971 whilst `How Do You Sleep' is an unfortunately shortened instrumental (actually just the backing track) - I know it's the soundtrack version but it could have been extended to the finish for this CD. ('Happy Xmas' has a spoken intro and 'Give Peace A Chance', `Oh My Love' and `Instant Karma' contain short excerpts of dialogue from the film so could all be classed as slightly different.) Why they have seen fit to included twelve seconds of `Bed Peace' is a mystery that can only be solved by watching the film. I guess it might be because there is a guitar being played. The inlay has an introduction from Yoko with some familiar photos. One thing that I've noticed, and I don't know how long it's been this way, is that the song writing credit for 'Give Peace A Chance' is now just John Lennon.
So, is this worth getting? If you're a die hard Lennon fan, apart from the unissued versions of two tracks, you'll have everything on here; if you want a hits collection, there are better options available; if you're just passing through then give it a try. You do get a mixed bag to entice you to investigate the man's solo career further.
