Spectacular cakes is the title, and spectacular cakes is what you will find in it. It has it all; the recipes, the techniques, the designs, the templates. There is something for everyone, from the novice baker to the experienced decorator. I don't have other Mich Turner books so can't compare this with the others but there are so many beautiful cakes in this book that I am dying to make, it will be a long time, if at all, that I would need another.

I love the introduction of this book. There are different recipes to the norm with good detail about quantities, icing guides, stacking guides etc. I found, however, that the traditional cakes were either iced with spots, stripes, lace or were painted! I found I was turning the pages very quickly as many designs were essentially the same theme reinvented with perhaps a few flowers or butterflies added here and there to ring the changes. It went from traditional, to chocolate, to a mix of traditional and novelty, which felt like a confusing layout. The chocolate cake section was fantastic, although from the front cover of the book a little unexpected and I felt these cakes were a little lost in the middle of the book. Cakes like the green Easter cake, the purple Christmas cake, the red Parcel cake, the hideous 70s revival purple Clown cake (and I mean, hideous!!) were so simplistic and basic they have no place in a book called "Spectacular cakes" and would suit an "Easy cakes for kids" type book. Meringues, even stacked, seem to me to have no place in this book at all, although they look great. I would have liked more detail about each cake, and less cakes packed in. The cover cake is the most exciting one of them all and from this I'd expected more of the same unique designs inside. I wanted more from this book and whilst the techniques are very readable and very useful for reference, and the cakes in the main are lovely (sorry, I can't get the clown cake out of my mind), I'm not sure I'll use this book very much.

This is a fantastic book. I was fortunate to see Mitch Turner doing a cake decorating demo recently. Lovely lady, down to earth, and passionate about her cakes! This book has easy to follow instructions. I have made her chocolate cake for one of the tiers of a wedding cake and it went down a treat. My daughters wedding coming up soon, and she's asked for it to be included in her cake.
I happily recommend this book to everyone and cant wait for her new one thats due out later this year.

This book is very inspiring in "styling" of cakes. There are some recipes but I havent tried them as I usally use the book for inspiration when im going to decorate.
