| Customer Reviews: Not enough music August 15, 2003 Angus M. Glen (Switzerland) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I saw this tour in 2002, it was the best gig I've ever seen or heard in my life. A straight concert recording would have made a brilliant DVD, Brian's band merit the full extent of the format - BUT - there's not nearly enough music on this DVD. There is however WAY TOO MUCH of fellow celebrities gushing about how brilliant Brian is. I KNOW how brilliant Brian Wilson is! I don't need a parade of celeb's telling me. This disc is a wasted opportunity, the little ammount of concert footage that is in eveidence only leaves the viewer/listener wanting more. 5 stars for Brian Wilson - No stars to the creators of this DVD.
Good Timin' with Brian Wilson April 13, 2003 Jan Schepers (Sint-Niklaas Belgium) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I smiled a lot watching this DVD. That the music would be excellent, hasn't to be proved. I was especially happy to see Brian in such a fine form. A witty, immensly charming man, perfectly in control of himself and of course the music he performs with his outstanding band. This DVD is not a concert film. But in between the documentary snippets, there are enough uninterrupted performances of Beach Boys classics to enjoy. And clearly the maestro himself enjoys being on stage. That hasn't been always the case. You will see quite some funny moments like e.g. when Neil Young tries to master an organ part for Good Vibrations. And it is impossible not to be moved by God Only Knows and Lay Down Burden, both dedicated to brother Carl. There's only one minor remark. When people like Neil Young, Pete Townshend or Patti Smith (rightly) praise Brian for his work and his genius, it seems a bit over the top. But that's the American way I guess. Anyway, this DVD is a must for all dedicated BB/Brian Wilson fans. I can hardly wait for the Pet Sounds Live DVD, to be released in the summer.
Brian Wilson On Tour - the Show Of A lifetime? April 8, 2003 Mr. P. K. Edwards (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Quite simply this is an exceptional DVD, The concert tour footage is incredible, the musicianship of Brian and the band is supreme, the songs are of course purely sublime. The DVD also shows the rehearsal scenes where Brian leads the band into some of the most intricate and memorable arrangements that pop has ever heard. By interspersing the concert scenes with rehearsal material it gives the viewer a true glimpse of everything that has made this music so important and so special. It demonstrates the complexity and genius of the arrangements - where else in pop is there a moment which compares with the french horn solo at the start of God Only Knows and the slow guitar intro to California girls? - it highlights the sheer musicianship and discipline it takes a 12 piece band to recreate those complex orchestrations and arrangements on stage. Above all else it shows the real Brian Wilson, the man at work doing what he does best, a man clearly enjoying his music and wanting to share it with us all. These shows have had such praise lavished upon them that many have called them possibly the best concerts ever. It would have been easy just to release the concert on its own , what we have here is even more - the true Brian Wilson. He doesn't need praise from others to highlight the importance of his work, his music does it for him. This DVD does not let him or his "genius" down.
On Tour is a bit of a bore. April 1, 2003 15 out of 17 found this review helpful
This is a big disappointment for several reasons. Although the track listing and blurb on the back would have you believe that all the songs are played in their entirity, they are not. Frequently they are in the background, or snippets. The rehearsal footage is sparse and shows nothing of any interest. It is often more of an excuse for Brian to tell the band how good they are. You never feel like you're behind the scenes or being treated to something special. The most frustrating part of this DVD is the concert extracts themselves. A good deal the tracks seem to be lifted from the Roxy album with the footage from different performances edited over the top so you get the players magically changing clothes halfway through songs. The knock-on effect of this is that some shots are visibly slowed down to get the lip sync right. Very annoying and patronising. The camera angles are an alternation between EXTREME CLOSE UP of Brian or far away shots of the whole band. Having seen Brian in concert and being a huge fan this is not what I was expecting.
Yes he is a genius!!! March 19, 2003 Tracey Alderson (Harrogate, North Yorkshire United Kingdom) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This is a MUST BUY for all Beach Boys/Brian Wilson fans!!! If you saw him on the 2002 Pet Sounds Tour(as i did),then this brings back all the memories of how GOOD Brian is live! A perfect backing band in every sense,Brian is relaxed on stage and ...YES,even confident with his status as a true music genius. He says he needs the love from the fans...and he really does get it from the first glimpse of him! Great behind the scenes footage.....Brian rehearsing with the band, soundchecks,in store appearences,Brian relaxing in the dressing room(o.k at times he looks terrified with people coming upto him((Ronnie Spector))but hell,he still wants to go out and perform) All the hits are covered here in some shape or form...right thru the BBs era's,but some how sounding so fresh and energetic!! We even see Brian leave his safety platform(keyboard) and start dancing away with the band. This is outstanding viewing! FUN FUN FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
