Amazon.co.uk Review
The Beatles Anthology was initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to run alongside the series of three Anthology double-CD albums. This set of eight documentaries has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns' expansive projects. Still, you may find yourself with more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs", the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. This box set gives a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Great!   July 1, 2010

I'd been meaning to get this for some time and recently decided to purchase it and am pleased to say that I am glad I did. It contains lots of material and all the interviews seem to be very frank and honest. It provides a great insight into a band that were before my time but that I have been a fan of for ages. Very interesting and a worthy purchase for any Beatles fan.

For a band as lauded and beyond critical analysis as The Beatles, there are few truly definitive and in-depth studies of their story and legacy. Somewhere between Hunter Davies's and Phillip Norman's biographies of the band, with involvement of all the surviving key players, Anthology does a decent job of telling the facts behind The Beatles rise to fame and demise. There are minor quibbles - the early parts of the story are somewhat top heavy on black and white footage of the band playing their hits, with only brief interview content; the involvement of Pete Best and Stuart Sutcliffe in the early incarnations of the band is somewhat glossed over; there seems a disproportionate amount of time spent on the beginning of the tale, and not enough meat on the bones of the middle and later years.

But quibbles aside, this is as good a documentary on The Beatles as we are now ever going to get. Skillfully interweaving footage of John Lennon into interviews with the surviving 3 Beatles (at the time), Anthology slowly brings two thoughts to mind: that Lennon was far more likeable than he is often portrayed to be; and, as the story progresses towards its inevitable conclusion, that his loss is as thoroughly pointless and wasteful thirty years on, as it was perceived to be at the time.

Amongst many moments worth the price of admission is a snippet of George Martin reminiscing over 'A Day In The Life' in episode 6. Clearly still moved by what he must have heard a thousand times before, Martin recalls the chills that go up his spine when hearing the opening bars and Lennon's voice perfectly in tune with the mood of the song.

While 5 DVDs containing 8 episodes of well over an hour in length and a whole DVD of special features might appear too much for anyone other than the most ardent Beatles completist, Anthology is populist enough to appeal to anyone with more than a passing interest in the band's contribution to popular music in the second half of the twentieth century.

The interviews with the Beatles and their entourage, made at different times and in different locations are cut and pasted together to form a coherent whole. All are interviewed at length and give an honest and open account of events, with George Harrison in particular appearing relaxed and humourous about his role in the band. Nevertheless, this is not an in-depth expose of scandals and tensions, merely a well-worn if likeable retelling of an already well-known story. One suspects there is still much more that could have been told.

Overall, there is enough here for everyone, and this is a generously sized package at a very reasonable price. Beatles heaven indeed, and a reminder of why this music is still amongst the best that was ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Forever!   December 3, 2009

Bought this for my husband's birthday - we are both Beatles fans. It contains extra footage over what was shown on TV and is a great way to re-live the Beatles era.

Now that two of the Beatles are sadly no longer with us, the interviews are unrepeatable and although John was already gone when this was made, there are still many older pieces which include him too.

We'll be following this up with a trip to Liverpool next year to seek out some of the Beatles places and soak up the atmosphere. All in all it's a great way to celebrate our Beatles heritage.
