Like Monty Python but without the humour March 14, 2010 John Ferngrove (Hants UK) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film came up in conversation with my wife a few weeks back, as we reminisced about how much we had enjoyed it in our anarcho-delinquent younger days. Curiousity aroused, I checked for it on Amazon and, encouraged by the generally positive reviews, decided to risk the possibility of it turning out to be one of those 'not quite how you remember it' experiences, and ordered it for her birthday. The big day came and we duly settled down to the movie after dinner. My gamble did not pay off. Obviously the world has changed and so have we if there was a time when we could have found meaning and significance in this chaotic jumble. Our daughter, usually a big fan of 60's nostalgia, left the room in embarrassment, and I guess we only slogged to the end so that Chrissie shouldn't appear too ungrateful for her rather naff birthday pressie. The positive reviews here are entirely baffling. I can only assume that those reviewers have still not come down from the drugs they were on when they first watched it. There is certainly a concept here, that might have ultimately been crafted into a pertinent satire on greed and unchecked materialism, but that would have required a budget, a script, and some proper actors being at least semi-directed, none of which are in evidence here. Sorry, but this one's a real klanger.
The Magic Christian September 1, 2009 Montgomery Michaels (Melbourne, Vic, AUS) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Peter Sellers stars in this psychadelic menagerie. A host of stars appear as Sellers embarks on a trip of self-discovery. Ringo Starr appears as Sellers' 'adopted' heir. This movie is for those who enjoy seeing big-name stars in small-time roles. If you weren't around in the 60s, then this is the closest thing you'll get to experiencing swinging London - but with a critical appraisal of the social issues of the time.
A massive self indulgence June 12, 2009 Lou Knee (England) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
This chaotic comedy-satire is fairly typical of the type and quality of movie that man who couldn't say 'no', Peter Sellers had been making for at least five years by now. While it has its merits, for me The Magic Christian is too ambitious, too wide ranging in its targets and far too undisciplined. It actually makes his movies with Woody Allen look fairly well made, it is that loose and shabby. There are bits to admire, obviously, but I mean bits, as it is a film made up of bits badly stuck together. Ringo Starr playing a parody of Ringo Starr added much to the self indulgence factor, and it made it very hard to watch all the way through, for me. Yes, it was satirical, yes it was irreverent, which are good facets usually, but it was just so badly put together and incohesive that it merits very little praise at all. I know it's shot in a deliberately anarchic absurdist fashion but too often this is used as an excuse for a chaotic narrative. Some of the dialogue is good as is the general theme and idea, so for me it's a curate's egg at best.
If you want to see a rare break from this trendy garish 60s pseudo satirical fare Sellers was almost permanently immersed in by now, then get the wondrous Hoffman (his next movie) and watch the man exhale.
A Forgotten (cult?!) Classic February 23, 2009 Chris (Herefordshire, England) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I saw this movie years ago and had never forgotten it ... The current economic chaos reminded me to check it out again and a quick check on trusty Amazon showed it was now available in DVD for a bargain price - so good in fact that I ordered another copy to be sent to a friend in Texas (no problems with 'Region' incompatibility for us - we use Linux ;) ... Features a stellar cast and is based on the novel by the great Terry Southern of Dr Strangelove fame. If you haven't seen it then you are missing a treat ... It stands the test of time remarkably well and now resides in my collection Top 10.
Go on order it now - You know you want to, eh?!;)
Is this Wide Screen (Letterbox) or "Pan & Scan?" April 14, 2008 B. Wright (NY, USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Please, someone who has this PAL version DVD, tell me what the Aspect Ratio is? Or just, is it Wide Screen or not? I own the NTSC DVD and it's not Wide Screen, but "Pan & Scan" Full Screen. Before I spend for this PAL version, I'd like to know.
Very Much Thanks.
